If you’ve ever seen a snowy white egret standing gracefully, be grateful: These birds almost disappeared from Palm Beach County in the late 1800s. Why? Their feathers were coveted for ladies’ hats.
The county’s 14,000 fourth-graders know about this because they’re all reading Harvey E. Oyer’s book The Adventures of Charlie Pierce: The Last Egret.
